Some pre-emptive cold water for 2010's winter/spring darlings

36

The "pre-preseason" rankings that pundits have been churning out earlier and earlier each year give some indication as to which teams will be the trendy picks through spring and summer. That goes for national-title favorites as well as the "sleeper" teams supposedly poised to present the big boys with their biggest challenges.

Handicapping the WGC-CA Championship

27

Hello Blue Monster, old friend. Nice to see a loaded field again. Time to load up the fantasy roster for this week.

A-List: To Phil or not to Phil, that is the question. Phil Mickelson erased a long-running history of mediocre Doral showings with last year's trophy hoist, but he hasn't knocked anyone's socks off so far in 2010.

Feud of the week: Atlanta vs. Kentucky for a 2011 race

25

Yes, He With The Chin Hair vs. He With The Muscles is even more obvious than last week's McMurray-Montoya feud, but that Barbaro has been beaten enough. He's getting tired.

Instead, let's talk about Atlanta Motor Speedway, site of He With the Chin Hair's flip on Sunday.

Why Atlanta? Well, because Atlanta seems to be the odds-on favorite to lose a race date to Kentucky Speedway.

The Packers may be adopting a third/alternate jersey

25

The Green Bay Packers, who sport one of the most classic and distinctive looks in all of sports, appear to be giving into the alternate/third jersey temptation.

There's no word yet on what the alternate jersey will look like, though it's expected to be unveiled on Friday. The rumors point to a throwback jersey, as opposed to a new design or an alternate color, which I consider good news. A throwback would be far less egregious than some trendy new black uniform, with a stylized font and green and gold trim.

Kentucky's DeMarcus Cousins on Kevin Stallings: 'Who?'

It's probably safe to assume that DeMarcus Cousins hasn't watched too much Vanderbilt basketball in his lifetime.

The world according to Hardy hits U.S. shores

It's 17 days out from his clash against Georges St. Pierre at UFC 111 and the Dan Hardy hype machine has arrived in the New York area. Hardy posted his first stateside video blog. There's not a whole lot to it aside from cup shopping, some awful teeth and revealing the nugget that he'll be spending some time on Long Island, the home of Matt Serra, the last guy to take out GSP.

U.S. Senate candidate on how campaign 'stole' Columbus logo

21

Marc Delphine was fond of the logo a volunteer had designed for his campaign for a U.S. Senate seat in Oregon: a silver star wrapped in a star-spangled banner that his designer told him evoked the letter 'D' for branding purposes.

It certainly was a memorable symbol. In fact, it was already being used by the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, as Delphine was stunned to discover on Wednesday.
