Our laboratory moved today, little darlings, and it was quite an endeavor. I smell horrible, I am covered in filth, and I still have a grant to finish tonight. The bright side is that the job is done and I had lots of time to spend with the lab peeps to plot and scheme. I'll tell you more about it soon. In short, though, if I never, ever, ever have to move a lab again it will be too soon.

I have to warn you all, little muffins. I am about to have a serious getoffamylawn moment.

Figure 1: Pretty much like this, minus the droopy bits. Dr. Isis has no droopy bits.

To "Mary" at the Principal Investigators Association.
Dear alleged "mary@principalinvestigators.org",
It is not frequent for me to dislike someone I do not know, but I am developing a very, very robust dislike for you. I don't know how you obtained my contact information, but if there is one thing I can now guarantee everyday, it's that I am going to receive a fucktillion emails from "mary@principalinvestigators.org". Each and every day, there you are. Taunting me from my inbox. What can you possibly have to tell me that requires daily contact?

Dr. Isis is in the dog house tonight, little muffins. Deep, deep in the dog house. All I can do is pour myself a Jameson and tell you all of my tales of sorrow.

Dr. Isis is at the casa of her in-laws this weekend. It is their 40th wedding anniversary and we have made the many, many mile trip to spend it with them. This has been a generally relaxing trip filled with much Jameson for Dr. Isis and much shenanigans for Little Isis. Last night Little Isis's grandfather took him swimming at 11pm after enjoying some chocolate cake at 10pm. I can't imagine anything cooler than late night chocolate cake and swimming if you are three years old.

Dr. Isis has received a lovely email from a graduate student who needs some help figuring out how to interact with her new mentor. She writes:
Dearest Goddess of shoes and science,
I humbly ask that you help a girl out with two questions, both of which fall within your realms of influence, though one is a sight simpler than the other. I also humbly ask that you take my name and institution out of this here email should you decide to post it.

Inside Higher Ed has a news squib about gender disparities in academic science, which points to a Nature story about a survey on job satisfaction (bad IHE, giving a false impression on the story!). The gender portion of the story is limited to a short section at the end of the article, and one graph:

O.K. It's been a while since I last posted, but I do have a good excuse. I've been on the road with my family for the past 5 weeks, and have just settled in London. I'm here because I am about to start a half year sabbatical, and to give you a sense of where I'm working, here are a few picture hints (note that it's not, as my Son thought for a while, Hogwarts).
Here's the "foyer" (img link):

You will probably have noticed by now, DearReader, that the NIH grant game is not exactly a distasteful part of my job. Don't get me wrong. I'd be much happier if I had landed in some hard-salary situation with exceptional institutional support, local funding sources procured by the philanthropy side of the institution and just generally had fewer concerns about actually funding my laboratory.
That didn't happen, however. I landed in a job which requires me to be at least minimally competent at acquiring major research funding. I was not particularly prepared for this.

A comment at Prof-like Substance caught my eye.
You called yourself a PI? What's with all these biomedical people referring to a professor as a PI? In some fields a professor is a professor. An academic title is more dignified than an administrative acronym.
