Do Graduate Students and Postdocs Overestimate Their Importance [On Becoming a Domestic and Laboratory Goddess]

17

Our laboratory moved today, little darlings, and it was quite an endeavor. I smell horrible, I am covered in filth, and I still have a grant to finish tonight. The bright side is that the job is done and I had lots of time to spend with the lab peeps to plot and scheme. I'll tell you more about it soon. In short, though, if I never, ever, ever have to move a lab again it will be too soon.

A request from me [Eruptions]

16

As I've mentioned, I will be giving a talk here at Denison on the Eyjafjallajökull eruption and how the events unfolded on the internet - specifically, I'm interested in the idea of the general public taking an active role in volcano monitoring. So, I have a request from Eruptions readers - and by no means do you have to take part.

Returning to Domestic Goddesshood - Shopping to the List [On Becoming a Domestic and Laboratory Goddess]

10

I have decided that this weekend I am a new woman, little darlings. These last 8 months or so I have moved at work and at home from task to task, from person who needed me to person who needed me, and from crisis to crisis without much thought of myself. You might say that this sounds totally selfless, but I assure you that it is totally stupid.

An Open Letter... [On Becoming a Domestic and Laboratory Goddess]

11

To "Mary" at the Principal Investigators Association.

Dear alleged "mary@principalinvestigators.org",

It is not frequent for me to dislike someone I do not know, but I am developing a very, very robust dislike for you. I don't know how you obtained my contact information, but if there is one thing I can now guarantee everyday, it's that I am going to receive a fucktillion emails from "mary@principalinvestigators.org". Each and every day, there you are. Taunting me from my inbox. What can you possibly have to tell me that requires daily contact?

How Many Physics Professors Does It Take? [Uncertain Principles]

14

Johan Larson emails a suggestion for a post topic:

How many profs would it take to offer a good, but not necessarily excellent, undergraduate physics degree?

I can give you an empirical answer to this: Six.

I say that because in the course of my undergraduate physics degree at Williams, I took classes from only six different professors. Five-and-a-half, really, because one of those was half of a team-taught course. I had three-and-a-half classes with one professor, and two others for two classes each.

Some More Thoughts About Value-Added Teacher Evalution [Mike the Mad Biologist]

12

Tuesday, I criticized the LA Times' use of the 'value-added' approach for teacher evaluation. There were many good comments, which I'll get to tomorrow, but Jason Felch of the LA Times, pointed me to the paper describing the methodology. I'm not happy with the method used.

Waves: Moving Without Going Anywhere [Uncertain Principles]

16

At the tail end of Tuesday's post about wind and temperature, I asked a "vaguely related fun bonus question:"

If the air molecules that surround us are moving at 500 m/s anyway, why isn't the speed of sound more like 500 m/s than 300 m/s?
